Released by Universal in 1916, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA was the first great special effects spectacular of the early cinema. Its story concerns a team of 19th Century American scientists who investigate a series of naval disturbances believed to be caused by a sea monster. They soon find that the creature is actually the Nautilus, a submarine piloted by Captain Nemo, a hate-driven renegade seaman. The film was one-and-a-half years in production, with underwater scenes filmed in the Bahamas, interiors shot at Universal's Leonia, New Jersey studio, and massive battle scenes filmed at the new Universal City complex in California. Director Stuart Paton designed 20,000 LEAGUES to take advantage of a revolutionary new apparatus for underwater filming recently perfected by the Williamson family.
